The only reason we should be going to Nationals is to WIN, not just to say we 'competed' in the National Championship. To WIN. I've only been with this team for a few months, but I know we can win, we can do it, but, it will take a lot of work and dedication from all of us.
Greg is right, we need to forget Ottawa. It was great, we did well, but its in the past. We can't dwell on our laurels and expect to just waltz in and win in New Jersey. Dwelling on past success leads to complacency which leads to overconfidence which leads to disaster (or at least, in our case, to poor performance).
We have to be willing to do more than we did to get ready for Ottawa. We have to get better as a team and as individuals. It won't be easy, it won't always be fun, but, if we win we'll have that to treasure for the rest of our lives. I've never had a shot at any kind of National Championship - ever.
I'm making a commitment to be the best paddler I can be for the team. That means making every practice minute count, improving my stroke, and stepping up my out of practice work routine. I'll give everything I've got to this team for the next two months to get ready for this event. I've got at least 10 more lbs of fat I can donate to the cause so my goal is to be around 190 for the race while improving my strength/endurance.
