About Christine Gillis - Team Manager
Tribute to a Tiger
A woman is the only thing I am afraid of that I know will not hurt me.Abraham Lincoln
On March 27th the Ewe Sheep paid tribute to our team's "Tiger" Christine Gillis, our Team Manager, at a luncheon held at Mallory Country Club. It was a celebration not only to honor Chris on her birthday but in recognition of the immense energy Chris devotes to the team at practices, races and behind the scenes to keep the Black Sheep operating smoothly. Chris, characteristic of her Chinese zodiac sign of the "Tiger" is a valiant and respected member of the team for her role as manager and right hand to her husband Gordon, the Team's Captain and is a valued team player for her paddling skills. She is co-founder of the Black Sheep Team and instrumental in its development as it evolved into a winning and charitable team.
There is a woman at the beginning of all great things.
She is made of "tiger" toughness as demonstrated at Walgreen's Orlando International when she was struck with breathing difficulties and valiantly fulfilled the starboard lead paddler position for a teammate who could not be at the race, and led us to a gold medal win in the Military Cup and a bronze medal in the Division A mixed final.
A woman is like a tea bag - you can't tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water.
It would be difficult to define Chris' many duties on the team, because so much of what she does is not visible to everyone, but what we all do know is that part of her role is coordinating the team's needs to make sure we all have the attire, equipment and documents required to join the team, the affiliated dragon boat clubs and enter the races.
Man can never be a woman's equal in the spirit of selfless service with which nature has endowed her.
She is always involved, whether it be organizing a fund raiser for the team, volunteering for charities like Toys for Tots, honoring and greeting our WWII Veterans, traveling to Tampa to the James A Haley Veteran's Hospital to provide needs and comfort for the Wounded Warriors, attending the GMDBC monthly meetings and captain meetings, where she is Captain Gordon's voice for him and she is always present at the team's social functions. On top of this role she is a devoted wife to the man of her love.
No man succeeds without a good woman behind him. Wife or mother, if it is both, he is twice blessed indeed.
What ever the team's demands, she meets it. She is the one we turn to when we have needs and she is always there for us and we all admire and love you Chris for the team "Mom" you are to us. And for that Chris, and for the many unseen contributions you make to the Black Sheep Marines, we can't thank you enough.
YOU ARE ONE HECK OF A TIGER WOMAN!
A really strong woman accepts the war she went through and is ennobled by her scars.
Chinese Zodiac Tiger
The Tiger, the living symbol of strength and power, generally inspires fear and respect. Tigers' compelling dynamism, intense activity, independence and curiosity about others make them irresistible, persons of multiple charms. Tigers attract followers and admirers. The Tiger is courageous, active and self-assured, and makes an excellent leader and protector. However liberal-minded Tigers may be, they are passionate, rash, and resist the authority of others. Although they are selfish in the little things, they are capable of great generosity,
even of altruism, in the larger. Tigers are men and women of action, thrust by destiny into the spotlight. Tigers are fearless creatures in as much as they blind themselves to dangers and impetuously rush in where more cautious individuals would fear to tread. Outspoken in the face of injustice, their strong humanitarian instincts will not allow them to pass by if they see a wrong perpetrated upon another. Tigers tend to renounce confining traditional roles, opting for a more unfettered life. With a wide ranging mind, they can adopt any number of careers. Their many experiences serve to enrich their life and add depth to their nature. Material benefits matter little to them. Tigers have an inborn magnetic personality that attracts people to them like bees to honey. Warm-hearted, sociable and friendly, they are characterized by their frank, honest and open approach. Their immense kindness and generosity will always shine through except when crossed or backed into a corner, for then they can become vehement and ferocious. Solitude is often the price Tigers pay for their position of authority, but they become accustomed to it. Better still, they draw on the experience, gaining new energies and great strength.
